One of the great things about being a writer is I feel everything..one of the downsides of being a writer is I feel everything..deeply. Its part of the gift and some would say curse. Ill gratefully take it as it allows me to access and translate emotion in song and is a gift of walking between the worlds and downloading music. When I am writing I feel closest to God. When I was young I was a lonely child,an only child growing up in the country on the outskirts of a small Texas town. My records were my friends..my connection to life. Surprisingly as friendly as I am I always felt different, insecure, like I never quite fit in. I think that comes with feeling everything, being empathic and being hispanic. It was a different time in this country. I was told not to tell anyone that I was Mexican American, it was my secret. My mother made it hard for me to see my father and I desperately missed my beautiful brown dad. I felt disconnected from my heritage and who I was. Looking back now I see the grace and gift of the perfect storm of my childhood to create a creator. There was no one to talk to so I listened to music. I had to get what I was feeling out of me so I wrote. The loss of my dad and my longing for him created a life long passion to share the beauty of the hispanic heritage in music with the world. I am grateful to now see the divinity in it all. Truly many times it was those old souled songs that kept me alive. Although they were beyond my years, my soul understood and was comforted. Today I had to pick my last song for the Linda Rondstadt Tribute in LA . She was and is such an inspiration as the first country rock loud and proud Latina crossing all musical borders and sharing her spirit in song. There were plenty of reasons to do other tunes but I chose this one . As a child I rocked myself to sleep many a nights to MANY RIVERS TO CROSS .Tonight I send this out to that lonely little girl in me and any of you wrestling in your lives..may you find comfort in the arms of this song and find your way across one more river to cross tonight.
