One of the greatest lessons Ive learned over the past - TopicsExpress

One of the greatest lessons Ive learned over the past year-and-a-half or so is to track my finances. This is very easy to do in a spreadsheet program (or on paper, if you like) and provides the cold hard facts: how much money you are earning, how much money you are spending, and where that money is going. Personally, I keep a strict log of my transactions, down to the cent when I can (or the dollar if I forgot to get a receipt), and divvy everything up into different categories (phone bill, gas bill, food, fun, etc.). I then total up the amount in a separate column, and subtract that amount from my weekly income in another column. Where your money is going tells you where your priorities are and can help encourage better decisions at the cost of only a few minutes per week. Oh, and watching your net savings begin to slowly increase is very satisfying as well. Im not a financial expert by any means, and am still learning, but I thought I would share something that has been working for me in the hopes that maybe it could help some of my friends, too.
