One of the greatest things about Quantum Leap is the fact that there actually is some scientific basis behind it. Do we remember a few years back when the world was panicking, because of the experiment to accelerate particles and crash them together? There was a miniscule chance that it could cause a black hole and destroy the Earth (and eventually the universe). Its believed that one of the few things in the universe which might actually make it possible to bend time is a black hole. Ill come back to this point in a moment... Sams string theory for time travel is also surprisingly accurate. String theory is the study of our universe under the assumption that all particles are not points, but are in fact one-dimensional objects known as strings. Sams theory is that a persons life is in fact a string, and that it can be looped (and in string theory, they often study would would happen if the strings were looped), so that a person doesnt die, they just repeat their life. Then they ball the string (also something that is studied in string theory - they like to see what happens when strings are manipulated in lots of different ways) and parts of the string cross over, thereby making it possible to leap between days of your life. Now going back to Sams project - they in fact have a particle accelerator, and they speed up Sams particles to the point where they crash, thereby creating a (manageable) black hole - the only thing that can manipulate time. This traps Sam in a time loop, with that particular point in time being one end and his birth the other, thus making it possible for Sam to relive moments of his life. Now the fact that Sam is stuck in a time loop is important, as it answers the question many people have asked - what is considered Sams lifetime? Would it include the years after he had leapt (as long as he had been alive for that long while leaping). The answer is no, the loop ends at the moment Sams particles were accelerated. If you listen to Deborah Pratts interview on the main site, she talks more about the science behind Quantum Leap. quantumleappodcast/interviews/deborah-m-pratt/ ~Hayden
