One of the important things in my life since I was a child was having the ability to dream. To imagine all sorts of great possibilities that could have happened to me before I was born. Meeting my heroes such as Bach, Satie, and Van Gogh, and having conversations with them. I would like to have known the actor John Garfield, the composer Sergei Rachmaninov, the poet Theodore Roethke, the physicist Albert Einstein. I always dreamed of a world without cruelty and greed, of a humanity with the same creative brilliance of out solar system, of an America worthy of the dreams of Martin Luther King, and the majesty of the Statue of Liberty. Thus when I started making this record, I wanted it to be a tribute to the America that could be, that really should be. A statement about the true greatness and depth of this country and the myriad of people who live here and have lived here. This country was built in part on innovation, the desire to create something new and different; in part on a desire to express oneself freely; and in part on the suffering of many. Out of all that, people never stopped creating, hoping, dreaming. This is the way this country has always been – inventive in every field.
