One of the many things I love about the Pogues Fairytale of New - TopicsExpress

One of the many things I love about the Pogues Fairytale of New York is how it sets up its own world, while communing wit the world at large. For instance: the man at the beginning in the drunk tank sings what we are meant to think is a doleful tune in The Rare Old Mountain Dew. That title has been repurposed here, and made to fit into a grander vision, for The Rare Old Mountain Dew--and I wonder how many people who claim to love Fairytale of New York have ever bothered to listen to it--is anything but doleful. I did a similar thing in Here, Googan Googan: Tales of Cape Cod for Lubbers, Lovers, and Angels. Its eight stories, with characters coming back in--the young college girl who masturbates in front of a wannabe film director high school kid is someones saving grace of a wife later, for instance--and each story but one has a character mentioning something about Cape Cod Beer, which has the slogan, A Vacation in Every Pint. They all say this differently, in their own voices, but the thing is, a couple instances predate the existence of Cape Cod Beer. Which meant absolutely nothing to me. Anyway, this is The Rare Old Mountain Dew. Note how adroit MacGowan is at coming in after someone elses vocal line and just seizing a song. He does it in Fairytale with you were handsome/you were pretty bit. Might want to check out Donleavys A Fairy Tale of New York, too. https://youtube/watch?v=YZnTfrT_-aA
