One of the morning blessings is “Blessed are You Hashem….. Who has provided me with all my needs” In his commentary Alei Shor, Rav Shlomo Wolbe explains that each person is created in order to accomplish a specific purpose in the world, and Hashem provides him with all the necessary talents, powers, and resources— both physical and spiritual— so that attainment of his purpose is not beyond him. Every individual has an important role and is given all that he needs in order to fulfill it. Hashem, the Giver of the Torah, assigns every Jewish male a specific portion of the Torah for him to understand and master. Each Jew has a part of the Torah that he can understand better than anyone else. He is equipped to grasp that part of the Torah, and he comes to earth to struggle to attain that grasp. For attaining his portion in the Torah, every Jewish male is given all his needs. There is a famous story about Rav Naftoli Amsterdam, who one day commented to his Rebbe, Rav Yisroel Salanter, “I wish that I had the brain of the Shaagas Aryeh (a famous scholar), the heart of the Yesod V’Shoresh HaAvodah (another famous scholar) , and the character traits of my mentor! Then I could serve Hashem properly!” Rav Yisroel Salanter answered him, “Naftoli, your job is to serve Hashem with your brain, your heart, and your character traits. Only with what Hashem gave you, can you truly serve Him.”
