One of the most amazing programs to me is the MacArthur Foundation awards that bestows unexpected amounts of money on emerging scholars, artist, musicians, and so forth so they can freely pursue their muse so to say. We had a young women poet/writer here at UGA that received one several years ago. Creatives and artists amaze me as well. Here is a commencement speech delivered by one MacArthur winner on the artistic process, her external/internal processes she faces in her work as an artist. She even shares her top 10 insights for being successful as an artist. Some of you may view that as a transgression of the creative process. I dont...I found them insightful and worth comparing to how I had tried to manage my career as an academic in a university environment that often strictures what you want or need to do. Or, evaluate it as production. It struck me that some of you, given the new semester looming, might benefit form thinking through this artists thoughts, as they parallel the process of being a an academic.
