One of the most fundamental aspects of healing is to let yourself cry. There are many ways that a person benefits from crying, such as: releasing toxins, improving mood, releasing pent-up emotions, and lowering stress levels. Often, people who hold back their tears end up causing more harm. Crying is an essential aid in the healing process, and sometimes people have to get in touch with the way they truly feel to heal emotionally and physically. Tears that have an origin in grief or stress have actually been scientifically verified to release toxins. Biochemist William Frey, conducted an experiment that showed that tears formed from sadness and stress contained more toxins than tears formed from eye irritation. Stress, causes hormones and toxins to accumulate in the body, and crying is a natural elimination method. Crying has also been shown to initiate an endocrine system response that stimulates the production of endorphins. These endorphins elevate our mood and allow us to feel better. This mood enhancement allows our emotional centers to regain stability. Crying also allows toxic emotions to dissolve. Stressful or traumatic situations, cause emotional stress to accumulate and crying is the best method of coping. From my personal experience, the stress of suppressed emotions have a physical manifestation. Grief that isnt properly resolved often manifests in heart or blood pressure issues. Suppressed anger is thought to increase the chances of developing cancer. Crying is an important way to settle these harmful emotions. Crying is also incredibly helpful for stress reduction. By eliminating toxins, stimulating the release of endorphins, and settling toxic emotions, overall stress levels are drastically reduced. When stress levels get excessive, the mind and body have a harder time repairing. The most important way to regain health is to eliminate harmful stressors, and crying is an effective method. Crying seems to be the most effective manner to cope with stress and pent-up emotions. Many people suppress their emotions and avoid crying; for these people, the best catalyst of healing may actually be learning how to cry again.
