One of the most important films on Netflix is director Gabriela Cowperthwaites fascinating documentary Blackfish which premiered at Sundance in January 2013. Blackfish tells the story of Tilikum, an aggressive bull orca who has lived the last 30 years in captivity and has sired 21 offspring, 11 of which are still living. The controversial films central debate circles around what exactly caused the whales behavior which links him to the deaths of three people; On February 20, 1991: Keltie Byrne, On July 6, 1999: Daniel P. Dukes, and on February 24, 2010: Tilikum was involved in a third incident when he killed Dawn Brancheau. Through interviews with experts and former SeaWorld trainers, and footage of the animals in the wild and in captivity, the filmmaker puts forth a compelling case for leaving orcas in the wild. Have a box of Kleenex handy. The film and a subsequent online petition have led to several popular musical groups canceling performances at SeaWorld and Busch Gardens Bands, Brew & BBQ events in 2013 and 2014. Russia has recently started capturing wild orcas for display and export. Captivity is a terrible thing for orcas, even more so when they have been torn from the wild. The latest development is that host city for the 2014 Winter Olympics, Sochi in Russia, is planning to display two wild-caught during the Winter Olympics. The capture and display of orcas causes immense suffering to the whales, and poses a risk to human life – some animals become psychotic with the stress. Tell Russia to release the orcas it has just caught and not become any further involved in this brutal practice. Watch Blackfish.
