One of the most important parts of playing soccer for me was my friends. Soccer is an incredibly “social” sport and most of my closest friends, even to this day, were kids I played with growing up or in college. As much as I loved to play the game, I think deep down, I was just as excited (if not more) to see my friends at practice, games, and tournaments. When I try to think back about my youth soccer experience, it is very difficult for me to recall any games, big wins, tough losses, or other events that I figured I would remember when I was older. The things that I can recall most vividly are things that occurred with my friends on the team. Inside jokes, hanging out at the hotels before and after games, waiting to be picked up from training, being upset when a friend changed teams or moved away, a player getting injured, carpooling for games, team meals, etc… those types of events, the ones where I got to spend time with my teammates, that I can remember the most. As coaches and parents, we cannot forget about this critical part of the kids sports experience. In the end, it will be the most important thing and what they remember and value the most.
