One of the most influential elements of 80s comics had to be Marvel Comics Epic Comics imprint. Not only did it mark a milestone in Marvel allowing creators ownership of their work, it was launched by Jim Shooter (ironically given the situation at the time between he and Jack Kirby over the Kings original artwork) and overseen by Al Milgrom and the sublime Archie Goodwin. For many people, it was their first exposure to material like Starlins Dreadstar (later to find a home at First Comics), Pat Mills and Kevin ONeills Marshall Law, Rick Veitchs The One, Sergio Aragones Groo (which had started at Pacific but spent MANY years being published by Epic), and even Wendy and Richard Pinis Elfquest. And not only that, but they were one of the first major US publishers of such influential works as Moebius Incal and Blueberry stories, and Katsuhiro Otomos Akira. They highlighted work by such diverse creators as J.M. DeMatteis, Steve Gerber, Clive Barker, Ted McKeever, Mike Kaluta, Elaine Lee, Frank Miller, Bill Sienkiewicz, John Bolton, Jon J. Muth and many more... Unfortunately, their fortunes dwindled in the 90s, and a proposed revival in the 2000s was pretty much over before it began. But while it lasted, it was a genuine standout in terms of product in the 80s, easily able to stand alongside publishers like Eclipse, Pacific, First et. al.
