One of the most moving conversations that I had this year was a community mother coming to the realization that this is not safe. Just the mere presence of oncoming traffic, police cars and flashing blue lights is proof of that. (Although the police here were actually really nice and cooperative, I may call them up in the morning to thank them!) Truth is we all take mighty big risks. We may die. We may get run over. We may be arrested 10-20 times. We may be evaluated on the basis of our politics 20 years from now. Employers ARE probably gonna look back on Facebook and twitter and our blogs. And Ive developed my response to that. If you dont want to hire me on the basis of my politics, then I dont need to work or study with you. My politics are personal, they run deep into my BLACK veins. My nieces and nephews lives are more important than all of the wealth that oppressive institutions can provide me. Just like the 2 generations before us, we just want to live. We just want to live. We just want to live. Something or someone may have to die. And it just may be me....I have a charge to keep. Its bigger than me.
