One of the most perfectly realized estates of the later Gilded Age is Milburn in the Windsor Farms area of Richmond VA, designed by the meticulous William Lawrence Bottomley during the thirties. Everything works together so beautifully, from the gates, the approach, the main facade, the entrance and the wings to the garden facade, which faces the James River and meets it with a gently sloping lawn. Few houses combine dignity, graciousness and refinement with such unfussy ease as this masterful excercise in American vernacular Georgian style by the unfalingly deft Bottomley
