One of the most poignant images (and there were loads) from Tuesday’s shocking World Cup semi-final was that of a Brazilian man with an impressive moustache in the crowd clutching a replica of the World Cup trophy and looking like his dreams had been crushed. The photo went viral as it seemed to pretty much sum up the sadness felt by Brazilian fans. That man’s name is Clovis Fernandes but he is also known as ‘Gaúcho da Copa’ - Cowboy of the Cup in Portuguese. He earned the nickname from his habit of wearing the traditional gaucho scarf, hat and boots. When he’s not working as a real estate agent, he travels the world following his beloved Brazil. He has visited over 60 countries and has attended over 140 Brazilian matches including three World Cup finals - always holding his replica trophy. Called Brazil’s “12th player” because of his unwavering support for his team, you’d imagine Fernandes would be completely devastated after the 7-1 defeat on by Germany on Thursday night but he seemed to remain optimistic. In a unbelievably sweet gesture, Clovis is reported to have given a German fan his replica trophy and is quoted as telling her: Take it to the final! As you can see, it is not easy, but you deserve it, congratulations! What a nice man! Here’s Clovis and his magnificent moustache in happier times. He’ll be ok - he’s doing what he loves and he’s been around long enough to know that things always get better. We just hope he gets his trophy back.
