One of the most pressing topics and issues to me that plague our community is Colorism. In the Black community, we all know that this lives and breathes foul breath just as it does in main stream America. However to me it is more tragic because its deeper rooted with us. We have adapted this mentality passed on by main stream America that being lighter in complexion has privileges. I grew up hearing that Red or Yellow girls were fast armed with stank attitudes while Dark or Black girls were smart. Lighter skin girls were always the first to get looked at and chosen for anything while the darker girls built resentment against them as well as themselves because of it. I personally have always been enchanted by darker girls, I have always found them very beautiful. I remember my niece Kandice Hill said to me at 8 or 9 years old. Auntie, I wish I was your color, my heart dropped because I knew where she was going with it, that poison had been introduced to her somehow. Why? I said feeling my emotions in my throat Because, its better. I could only look at her and tell her with all of my heart that I thought she was the most perfect little girl Id ever seen, and that she was the most beautiful girl in the world. In my experience, yes I can agree there is a lot of fluff about light skinned vs dark skinned girls but what people dont understand is that were are also victimized by our own. Often times were are the first to be beaten, raped and mistreated. Our value is placed on our exterior (which means sh!t) and we are often chosen as objects, show pieces and not women. I had the privilege to share this with a beautiful darker skinned sister one afternoon and she was in disbelief because shes always believed the lie as well. That somehow life was easier for lighter skinned women. She said shed never heard the other side before. It was a long and enlightening conversation that was therapeutic for all involved. I know that we all have our own crosses to bare in the beautifully hued skin that were wrapped in. Whether its Yellow, Caramel, Mocca or Chocolate there is no difference because on each side there are pluses and minuses pound for pound. Sisters please share with me your perspective..Lets Talk.
