One of the most useful lessons that I have learned when it comes to health and fitness is that our willpower is not unlimited. Often we put ourselves into conditions that are only barely sustainable in ideal circumstances. As soon as something goes wrong in any area of our lives, our plans tend to go to hell as its just too much to handle. Take, for example, a New Years resolution to follow a strict and perfect diet from now on out in order to lose weight. Coming out of the festive season we are usually well rested and our motivation level to improve is very high. The goals we set seem easily attainable and the rigid plans to get there very doable. However over time these goals become harder to reach and the plans become harder to stick to as our willpower is eaten away from time, stress from work, lack of sleep, and our relationships. This is why it is so important to: 1. Set realistic goals (both long term and short term). 2. Control your environment so that it helps set you up for success 3. Understand the importance of developing lasting good habits rather. than being intermittent with what we do and rely on willpower alone.
