One of the oddest TV successes in history was THE GONG SHOW. This was a 1970s game/talent show in which guest judges would bang the title instrument to eliminate contestants if their acts were bad enough. The warped imagination that created (and hosted) this piece of entertainment belonged to Chuck Barris, a man who also claimed to be a CIA assassin while overseeing the series. This over-the-top and very colorful personality is the subject of this week’s MOVIES YA MIGHTA MISSED MONDAY, the clever 2002 biopic CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND. The movie, incidentally George Clooney’s directorial debut (from a script by Charlie Kaufman), smartly takes Barris’ outlandish claims of being a secret agent at face value. This results in a very thorough exploration of the bizarre life and times of the great man, acted convincingly and well by Sam Rockwell. Kaufman/Clooney lace in a strong theme of regret, and effectively shift tone from the wackiness of Barris’ “everyday” life to the somber, dark world of espionage. Along the way, the filmmakers acutely convey the pressures of leading a double life that involves murder. You won’t see a biopic like CONFESSIONS OF A DANGEROUS MIND, one of those rare films that entertains while leaving behind something to think about. #movies #georgeclooney #1970s https://youtube/watch?v=tlZsSLe35z4
