One of the problems comes in the narrowness of education in Guyana. For the labour skill set to be truly holistic and to lend favourable opportunities for optimum development of each person, the education system must be diverse in its offerings. This is the issue in Guyana as we have many who are in the middle and lower tier levels of secondary education having a binary view on life with little seeing the grey- its either education or nothing. In the US (despite it not being my favourite country of comparison with Guyana), we can see an education system well adapted for those who excel in various fields. I am no educational psychologist but from inductive reasoning and basic intuition, it seems to be that those who are not as endowed in aptitude, tend to excel in vocational fields. Proper development (or at least provision for advancement) of these persons is the only way that we can ever truly optimize our populations capabilities. It all comes back to Guyanas developmental goals and us understanding the direction we wish the economy to go. Once we understand this, there is a place for everyone on the road to development.
