One of the problems with modern pop is its sameness. Analyses of music that extends from the mid-1950s to today indicate that music is only about 10% as interesting today as it was in 1968, which appears to have been a peak year for music. Sadly, it has been downhill since then. According to analysis, the music of 2014 is pretty much like the music of 1995 - well, a little more boring, but still very similar. One of the hallmarks of music in the era from the mid-60s to the mid-80s was diversity. Yes, there were soft ballads, but there were rockers, country, alternative, folk, folk-rock, instrumentals, and lots more. One of the more diverse artists, who sang music that we would consider to be in at least four different genres, was Donovan Leitch from Scotland. Donovan had a string of hits extending from 1965 to 1969 before changing tastes reduced his popularity. As I mentioned earlier, one of the characteristics of his music was diversity, and this top 10 song from 1968 was likely one of the most unusual of his hits. As I listened to this song, I realized that while it does have a style that puts it in the late 1960s, it still sounds fresh. Pretty amazing for a recording more than 45 years old. Enjoy!
