One of the projects we endorse is entitled Science Career Workshop, where we invite professors from different institutes to come over to U of W and give a short (50 minutes or so) presentation to the faculty and science students. The Biology Students Association believes that learning should not be limited to in-class, textbook approach. Thats not to say that the traditional university lecture style is ineffective or bad; rather, we believe that there is something to gain from real-life seminars (like Ted) that the in-class lectures simply cant provide. The benefits of real-life seminars may be: 1. Learning about new, exciting research in real-life settings; 2. Meeting potential graduate study supervisor(s) for those planning to enter graduate studies; 3. Getting a valuable insight into different professions, which may influence your career decision(s) or broaden your academic perspective(s); 4. Forging new social and professional connections; and 5. Having fun So we took this opportunity to invite two guest speakers: 1) Dr. Gary Domselaar, bioinformatics specialist chief at National Microbiology Laboratory (NML) and 2) the NML community liaison. The letters we sent are below, so please check them out!
