One of the prominent scholar of our time has just passed away with Liver cancer @ 85 in Lhasa, Tibet. Prof. Tashi Tsering, I remember seeing him a few times back in the alley ways of Lhasa and I have always been intrigued by his way of communicating with others. Feels a bit like Woody Allen, soft spoken and easy to follow the conversation. Recently, I read his book The struggle for Modern Tibet in a round trip train ride that goes around the pacific ocean. It was very moving and visual to feel his emotion and love for his people. His return from US to Tibet during cultural revolution is the pivotal part of his life. Instead of going to Tibet, he was taken to Shenyang in China. There he faced tremendous hardship under communist party. Later after more than a decade or so he was considered harmless and given a job to teach English. His wish to return to Tibet were closer and during that time he started working on Multilingual Dictionary, which was my very first dictionary to learn new words in Tibetan, English and Chinese. To this day his legacy on education is feeding the mind with new words everywhere. Here i am sharing a clip from my train ride and there you will see his photo. May he rest in peace.
