One of the rarest postcards Ive seen is this photo of the laying of the cornerstone of William Penn School 11 on Erie St. at Merritt Ave. The cornerstone is engraved as 1907. The school was designed by architect Louis Quien Jr. who was the city surveyor in the 1890s and the citys school architect during 1905-1913. I dont recognize the people at the ceremony but perhaps the architect, Mayor and Board of Education members were there. Quiens office and residence was at 251 Elizabeth Ave. He designed other municipal buildings including fire houses. He died in 1942 at age 63. Aerial photos indicate the school was demolished after 1987 and replaced with multi-family homes.
