One of the reasons I hate Christmas? Kids want a hamster/mouse/rat/guinea pig/rabbit for Christmas.. Pet shops make a killing from it.. But obviously dont always give the correct care advice.. What does this lead to? Animals living in tiny cages.. Usually January/February time the kid has become bored of the pet and its left in the small cage day in day out, usually with unsuitable bedding and often on an unsuitable diet. Others are sold on Gumtree to other kids who will just get bored again. Some are abandoned. Lucky ones are taken in by good rescues.. But they can only ever take in so many. Pet shops continue to sell animals, which continue to live unsuitable lives. Its not acceptable. Animals as gifts, not acceptable. If you want a pet for your child, make it your pet. Children get bored easily. A child should not be solely responsible for an animal. Make it your animal, and allow the child to help out. Do your research so the animal can live a decent life, and find a good breeder or rescue.. Stupid little rant over.
