One of the reasons I love Rich Mullins is his vagabond spirit and how he looked at himself as a Ragamuffin. He was rich but gave his wealth away. He was filled with problems yet he was probably the freest person I know. His life was a parable itself. I find myself strangely attracted to this man whom his friend called a man of no reputation. I find sometimes great difficulty ministering with leaders and ministers that are very rich. I have nothing against them or that. In fact some of my very best of friends are rich. Yet the thing that holds us together is to have that vagabond ragamuffin spirit of knowing the one thing that truly made you rich is to be loved by Jesus. But I could never subscribe to a life where I am expected to show no weakness or project an image that I have got it all together. I have nothing against that but thats me. I think to really appreciate grace, one must realized this. You must know without the Grace of God, you are the poorest man alive. Perhaps thats why Jesus started his ministry by saying blessed are the poor, in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven. I think Jesus wasnt saying its wrong to be wealthy but he was saying that you have to hunger for his love. You have to thirst for it. Im not saying God is stingy with his love or that you have to beg for it. On the contrary God gives it in abundance. What I believe Jesus was saying however is this. The love of Jesus is the air that you breath, the food that you need, the drink that you consume and that you will die without it. Its all that matters. Its all that keeps me alive. Without it I may own everything, I remain poor as a vagabond ragamuffin. Grace to you may be a doctrine. Grace to you maybe a movement. The fashionable message for the moment. Grace to me is my existence. Without it, I find no reason to live. I am sorry I am emotional this morning. I miss Rich Mullins.
