One of the reasons I was late to advocate against the R Word, besides my own shameful past history of using it, was the feeling that language is fluid enough that people who want to make fun of people with intellectual disabilities will always find a way to do so. It feels a little like tilting at windmills. I sometimes feel like the worst of society will never evolve, only adapt. Having said that, the whole derp thing has been under my skin for a while. I see a lot of people using it who I know dont make the association with people with intellectual disabilities, and Ive never said anything about it until now, because I hate feeling like That Guy. So Ill simple suggest that if you feel you need to find and use a word that equates stupidity with an intellectual disability so that you can make fun of someone, the problem isnt that politically correct busybodies are stifling your right to free expression. The problem is, youre an asshole.
