One of the reasons that I love being an Auditor...In January 2012, we concluded a year long joint-investigation with the FBI and the US Attorneys office into the misuse of Federal grant money and fraud perpetrated by a Salt Lake County manager who was administering the halfway house for the Lost Boys in St. George, Utah. The County manager committed egregious acts of fraud with the grant funds, along with the directors of the non-profit organization that ran the house. The house belonged to Jeremy Johnson and his associates ran the bogus non-profit organization. The investigation uncovered the fact that the non-profit was nothing more than a front for Johnson to funnel funds through his Grant-a-Day scam. A 25-count indictment was brought against the County manager by the US Attorneys office. Throughout the investigation, we discovered clear ties between Johnsons illegal activities and then Utah AG Shurtleff. Shurtleff lobbied for the bogus non-profit run by Johnson, and used his position as a former Salt Lake County Commissioner to pressure the County into an arrangement that the County had no business being involved with. All at the taxpayers expense. Todays arrests vindicate the evidence that we uncovered during the investigation. We need a County Auditor that has the experience and qualifications to be a watchdog for the taxpayer and be willing to follow the fraud trail all the way to the AGs office if necessary. Thank you to all of my fellow fraud fighters in the Auditors office and the FBI special agents, that I had the honor of working the investigation with! scottforcountyauditor/about.html
