One of the reasons that the animal movement has failed is because careerists have taken it over. These are people who do not have jobs except as professional animal advocates. They are dependent on donations for their salary and expenses. They cant alienate donors and they have to appeal to all those mainstream animal lovers who do not want to be told that veganism is the only rational response to the recognition that animals matter morally. So they sell their welfare reform campaigns and their single-issue campaigns. Those campaigns are not controversial, appeal to all the non-vegan animal lovers, and do not do a damn thing to change the world. In fact, those campaigns ensure that the world will never change. So earn a living doing something else and do your animal work as a volunteer. Finance your animal work yourself--not with donated animal dollars. Dont aspire to become a careerist and expect the movement to provide your living. Youll just end up compromising your values and selling the animals out. Just look at the mess we have now. There are more people employed as career advocates than at any time in history. And the movement is not only not progressing; its moving backward.
