One of the rubrical conundrums that Ive discussed with various people on occasion is what to do about what could be called Pontifical Sung Mass. I know that the Society has a form for this, although I dont know how much consistency there is among the bishops. At S. Gertrudes in Cincinnati they also have a form for this, and I understand that it has been fairly extensively researched, and that a description and set of instructions have been repaired, although I dont have a copy. Too, I have been told that this was officially conceded by indult to some bishops in some mission countries in the 19th or early 20th centuries, although I have never been able to discover if this was actually the case or not, and, if it was, what was actually ordered to be done. We had an especially aggressive form of this at S. Clements yesterday, with the only concession to pontifical ceremony being the use of the zucchetto and singing the (Prayer Book) blessing with three signs of the cross. Otherwise the celebrant functioned exact as a priest, including crossing the stole, as you will see in the accompanying photograph. For anyone whos interested, whats your experience of this function in the context of a generally traditional (Fortescue-ish, etc.) approach to the ceremonies? Does anyone know if this has been officially permitted at some point? And what are your thoughts on how it should be done, either in toto, or in particular aspects?
