One of the speakers at the event will be the fashion designer Stella Jean. Stella Jean is a Haitian-Italian fashion designer and former model, whose cultural identity often provides inspiration for her eponymous label. Born in 1979 and raised in Rome to a Haitian mother and an Italian father, Jean has her own high-end fashion label, Stella Jean. In September 2013, Giorgio Armani personally selected Jeans spring/summer 2014 collection to show at his 550-seat Teatro show space during Milan Fashion Week. “Multiculturalism remains the crux of Jeans work. I want to communicate through clothes a concept of opposite worlds and traditions fusing together in a sophisticated way and standing side by side with equal importance, not covering the other up, Jean says” - The Telegraph. Accolades include this summary from Suzy Menkes of the International New York Times, Stellas unusual ethnicity and her desire to make ethically sound clothes, helping the poorest women in the world, makes her bold and colourful clothes as beautiful inside as out. In 2013, Jean travelled to Burkina Faso with the International Trade Centres Ethical Fashion Initiative to source hand-woven fabrics produced by marginalized communities of women micro-entrepreneurs. There, she met artisan weavers and embroiderers and returned home brimming with hand-woven striped fabrics and ideas. Jean has been working with the Ethical Fashion Initiative since then and has expanded her work to now produce luxury handbags in Kenya and accessories in Haiti.
