One of the students in my special ed cass wants to get out of a gang because things on his block are getting too real--shankings, shootings. At the same time, he thinks going to Mexico to work for a drug cartel would be cool because they behead their enemies. Another wants to be a "good boy," but he also wants to use a gun to "defend" his block against members of rival gang. I let talk pretty freely and try to get them to think about consequences. Ideally, these young man would have counselling, mentoring, and a peer support group available every week at school. The social worker is usually too busy to give either one the period a month to which he is entitled, but they do have me and, I hope, other teachers. Just how does the ACT measure any of that?
