One of the things I enjoyed the most about this year musically was the return of the MUSICIAN ALBUM. Back in the day ,QUINCY JONES and NORMAN CONNORS and other high level musicians would release essentially producer albums featuring both established and sometimes even introducing new talented artists (ie JAMES INGRAM, BROS. JOHNSON, TEVIN CAMPBELL, PHYLISS HYMAN , JEAN CARN ,MICHAEL HENDERSON) LIL John Roberts with the The Heartbeat and Brandon Williams with theXII in 2014 both stepped from the background to release their debut albums as artists. LET THE DRUMMER GET SOME!!!. The beauty is while both albums showcase the musicianship , songwriting, collaboration and production ability of both,the albums are outstanding but totally different and both in their own way not genre specific which is great for just lovers of good music . Again the beauty of real musicianship and diversity. Robert Glasper and Nicholas Payton are featured on both projects. LIL JOHN ROBERTS actually also guests on Brandon Williams s project. Just to name a few XII features Pharoahe Monch , Frank McComb , Jean Baylor , Bernard Wright , Jesse Boykins III , Alex Isley and more. THE HEARTBEAT features Sa-Roc , Kipper Jones , Stokley , Eric Roberson, Anthony David , Musiq Soulchild , Snarky Puppy , Chantae Cann , and more. If you have not already I encourage you to check both out especially if you enjoy strong musicianship and variety.
