One of the things I would like to inform the doctors in educating them on the effects of Chiari is name calling must not be allowed. Each and every patient deserves the same dignity and respect that patients with any other life threatning illness receive. For instance..there would be public outrage if a brain cancer patient was ridiculed and told their pain and suffering was all in their head. Furthermore there should be dire consequences for the doctors who ignore or turn away any patient who are exhibiting signs of brain damage with a diagnosis of Chiari. Ryan suffered severe brain damage after surgery ...seizures...could not walk...incontinence and in his words my brain turned to mush . We also need to educate nurses to recognize the severe symptoms of Chiari. There was plenty of time to save my sons life had his severe brain compression been diagnosed sooner. Seven trips to the emergency room and trips to the doctors in the six weeks following his botched surgery resulted in no answers..not even a recommendation to seek a Chiari Specialist. Below is a photo of my son before and after surgery. The placement of his hands are called posturing..a common recognized sign of brain damage.
