One of the things hindering African unity is that the barriers of divide and conquer used to entrench colonial governments still persist today We need more conversations on African heritage and identities and use them to build unity and celebrate our diversity as Africans rather than as points for division and In order to do this we must engage in a process of decolonizing our minds and There is frustration amongst many young Africans because we learn about liberation movements aimed at making Africa ours, yet we find ourselves in a very ‘Western’ Africa and The Africa we live in now, is shrouded in and governed by many western values, at the cost of dispelling our traditional African values which are just as valuable and life giving and Education plays a central role in shaping and building up our identities as Africans and In forming our identity, we need to know our true history as Africans but the education systems as they are now, portray Africa as a continent without a history prior to contact with Europeans and We must learn of the history of slavery and colonialism which is important but only learn of ourselves as people who suffer and are victims but we don’t learn about Africans building the pyramids and the knowledge of mathematics and physics that it took to achieve that, or that some of the greatest, oldest universities in the world can be found in Africa, e.g. Timbuktu in Mali and never learn of our history of excellence, bravery, discovery, art and brilliance and that’s a problem
