One of the things that Bill Clinton did that should serve as a model for every president is that he never signed off on any spending without first establishing where the money would come from. This was how, after inheriting 12 years of republican trickle-down mismanagement, in only 8 years, he was able to balance the budget and deliver a surplus. The national debt actually declined under Clinton. The only time a president should ever authorize deficit spending is in a time of national emergency -- the Great Depression and World War II were good examples. Austerity doesnt work. Austerity creates depressions. Borrow-and-spend doesnt work either. It creates a short-term boom, but long-term inflation and crippling debt. But ... tax-and-spend, spend only what you can pay for, works great. The confederate party wants to weaken the federal govt, wants to pull power away from the national govt and return it to the states -- thats the whole states rights thing. They want to starve the federal govt, destroy its ability to regulate anything, and use it only for defense spending, very little else. This would allow them much greater license to operate on a state-by-state basis. And as we have seen in Texas, once they get their hands on the reins of power, they gerrymander themselves into a near-permanent majority. Thats why I say that Bill Clinton is the best republican since Ike. Because the current republican party has no relationship with the republican party that existed before Nixon. Obama is a pretty good republican too. The democrats need to remember one mantra for the next two years -- Its the economy, stupid. Campaign on that. The rest is details.
