One of the things that comes from actually living in a foreign country for some time is that as an American one is forced to totally get over the idea that everyone else wants to (or even should) be like us. People have their own cultures, ways, and narratives and they work more or less as well as our own. Yet there is something tremendously American of wanting to remake the world in the image of our country, whether in Kosovo or Iraq. This is a very interesting article. I had not been aware of how close we came to war with Russia under both Clinton and GWB. Really? NATO Commander Wesley Clark ordering the Kosovo runways blocked to intimidate and isolate Russian troops? I think the British officer who disobeyed orders and declined to do that is a hero.
