One of the things that most frustrated me teaching at MBS in Bogota was the ironclad requirement that each student in the entire class be presented lessons in exactly the same way, at exactly the same level, ignoring their level of English comprehension. As a consequence, there were students in every section that were hopelessly lost, while others were bored for lack of challenge, and a learning pace entirely too slow for them. This policy extended even to classes in the English language, the tragicomic result being students struggling to even speak or write a basic subject-verb-object sentence being taught classes in journalistic style, parallel construction, and literary analysis. My suggestion to separate students of similar levels into like sections was met with disdain, based on the reasoning that to label a child as less-advanced would be harmful to their self-esteem. As if sitting in a class, bewildered, praying desperately not to be called on in class, where your peers would see and hear your poor English, was not.
