One of the things we do at Homecoming is to recruit committee members for the church year. The communications committee manages the web site, our Google Apps for Non-Profits service, helps Susie with the phones and IT, and does important things yet to be determined. This committee has lain fallow for several years and needs to be revived, a mission established, and working processes established. There is some question as to whether this committee looks after the communications plumbing or actually does some communicating. It currently does a little of both because Im both web admin and author-editor. As with everything at UCN, it is a coalition of the willing and those who show up determine what happens and how it happens. Our web site is the primary means by which UCN promotes Unitarian Universalism and Unitarian Church of Norfolk. Most of that happens in the About UCN section of the web site and in the news. This is an important mission in need of good people. I know a bit about the technical end but Im not good with messaging, etc and need helpers. Communications and Technology is looking for a few good members with the following talents 1. Somebody who knows DNS basics to eliminate the single point of failure (me) for web site and Google Apps setup. 2. Somebody who can write a coherent paragraph to help with web site writing. 3. A librarian type who can help standardize tags and categories for web posts so we can use them to find things. 4. An editor who can keep the longer form content in About UCN literate and organized. 5. Somebody who knows Drupal 7 theming so we can further customize the web site. During the coming year, we need to workout the relationship between the membership committee and the communications committee. One of the important things our web site does is to bring people to our door but the staff and the other committees have to invite them in and get them to stay.
