One of the unpleasant lessons learned from several decades of living with a serious illness is that incorrect information can spread faster than lightening, and some people love to pass along (and enhance) gossip without checking on its accuracy or lack thereof. So, in the hope of heading off any new reports of my immediately impending death... here are the facts. Two weeks ago I learned that a pap test taken during my annual physical came back with abnormal results. A week ago, the specialist I saw to follow up on the test result did an examination and found some potentially problematic growths. Today, I had surgery to remove the growths and get samples to biopsy to determine whether or not they are cancerous. In a couple weeks, I will have the answer to that question. The concern is that this is a type of cancer found in people who live with immunosuppression, like transplant recipients and people with HIV. 34 years of living with HIV put me in this group. If it is cancer (IF being the key word), it is a form of cancer that typically responds well to radiation and chemotherapy. Frankly, after 34 years with HIV, potentially facing a disease that actually can be cured doesnt sound so bad. This is the extent of the information that is available. No one knows any more than this. Anything else said on the subject is speculation and gossip and should be disregarded. Anyone who tells you anything other than this is not a friend of mine, they are the opposite of that. If you have questions, ask me, not anyone else. Right now, I am home in bed coming out of the anesthesia and a bit out of it from the narcotic pain meds, but I am fine. Everything is on track for the party on Saturday and I hope to see lots of friends and family then :)
