One of the venues at which I am appearing either this week or weekend, or next year, asked me for an updated bio. I was a little bit in a tizzy so this is what I sent. Quote: An updated bio. Hmmm. It hasnt changed very much. Gregory Maguire has put on a little weight and appears to be drinking heavily. His youthful joie de vivre has not diminished a whit, though in a person of his age and decrepitude this makes him appear witless. Maguires most recent book, EGG & SPOON (Candlewick 2014) was too long to read, so no one knows if it is any good. Probably not. Marc Platt at Universal has optioned EGG & SPOON for a film treatment but this may be a clerical error, as the menu for takeout that Tuesday featured an egg cream so thick you can spoon it! and Marc hasnt had an egg cream in about thirty years. Maguires audit at the IRS is still pending (not a good sign, says his accountant) and the FBI files opened on the occasion of his trip to Nicaragua on a peace-keeping mission (hah!) are still closed. The Department of Social Services only gives a testy no comment when asked to comment. Since appearing on Oprah, Maguire writes to tell us that Oprahs ratings crashed and she appears to have left the TV industry altogether. In short, Maguire is short, and booming shorter with age: he may yet be able to play a Munchkin, and be coronated as the Coroner, if a house doesnt fall on him first.
