One of the very special benefits of living in a small city and community is the wonderful people we meet along the way, especially ones who have left an indelible impact not only on the City, but the people who they have touched. If there is any one person this holds true for is the late Stella Cocchiola (Stango), who will be laid to rest this week. One of her real joys was painting, and I would sit down with her at Stangos on a Friday night, and discuss art and her paintings that lined the walls of Long Island oldest Italian Restaurant which was founded in 1919. I would share some of my photography, and shared with her that I wish I could paint the way I viewed the world, yet was dependent on the Camera to be my brush and palate. She always encouraged to give painting a shot, yet that was typical of this very, very special person and restauranteur. Stella, may you rest in peace, and know you will be really missed. Our condolences go out to the whole family. What would really be nice here would be to share one of your favorite moments with Stella. Visiting is Mon. 2-4 & 7-9 pm at Whitting Funeral Home, 300 Glen Cove Ave. I believe she was so important to this City and its people, that the flags in Glen Cove should fly at half mast, just like we have done for others. Stella, now you can fly like an eagle with all the other angels!
