One of the women I was counselling yesterday worked for a family - TopicsExpress

One of the women I was counselling yesterday worked for a family for 6 years, excellent relationship, the job came to its natural end, good reference etc, (her child died in a car accident in Zim in 2012 (RIP) did the necessary and then continued working until this year) Now she had 6 years of Nanny & housekeeping experience, good I think a good candidate. A brave decent woman. She got a new job from gumtree, her previous employers spoke to this new family with a high recommendation for her, and she started the new job and moved in. They then asked her to hand over her passport as they said, they needed security in some form and this was what they required. She handed over her passport. Two months into the job, she is depleted, depressed & tired, these are not good people, she feels trapped. I told her it is not right to give anyone your passport except the police or department of home affairs or your own embassy for official use for visa purposes etc or one only loses their right to hold their passport in the case of imprisonment. It is your personal document, and no employer is allowed to ask for this. Stories such as these are why Chilton operates from the world renowned Scalabrini organization, where we have the resources and support of professionals able to assist people with difficult situations, we can offer professional additional services free of charge, permit, labour assistance, legal experts, counselling if & forever how long is needed. We have a plan forward for this lady. Workers within the domestic and semi skilled market need to be super vigilant against such unscrupulous practices that breach human rights and one dignity.
