One of this years winners of the Goldman Prize (a.k.a. the Nobel Prize of environmentalism) is New Yorker Helen Slottje, who figured out how to use zoning laws to ban fracking within city limits. Using Slottjes legal framework, more than 170 towns and cities in New York have successfully passed laws to prohibit fracking. An acronym often used to negatively describe people opposed to new development near their homes is NIMBY (which stands for not in my backyard). Slottje addresses NIMBY here: We’re not NIMBY. We’re NIAB: Not in anyone’s backyard. If everyone said “Not here! This is my land!” we’d have a really powerful movement. I’m hoping to use the Goldman Prize to get across the message that people should not feel embarrassed at feeling NIMBY. We need to break through the fog of spin-doctorism. Get people motivated and really talking property rights and environmentalism. Read more:
