One of those nights....wide awake as soon as my head hit the pillow. On occasion when this happens instead of counting sheep I count old friends....the many residents I helped care for working at Applewood for 9 years...over 200. I go room by room and try to recall each person who occupied each room. Some I can picture the face and remember certain things about a person but not quite recall the name.....very few have totally slipped from my memory. I can remember little details about each of those dear people, some funny, some sad, and know that no matter if they were outgoing and sociable or withdrawn and seemingly grouchy, if a person took the time to get to know them, you could find something to love about each one, and maybe even coax a smile or two out of even the grumpiest, keeping in mind these sweet old folk have been uprooted from the homes they love and not in the best of health. I am lucky and blessed to have called so many "friend". Now in my retirement years I continue along with my husband to make new friends at many retirement homes as we go and sing for them, and we both feel like this is the most rewarding job aside from raising our family we have ever had. Off to bed to count a few more friends and hopefully sleep, as we will be singing for some friends this afternoon. Love..
