One of your most important obedience training tools with dogs you have is your voice. But it can easily become a tool that people overuse and handlers can develop the bad habit of talking to their dogs while training. Especially while heeling, trainers will chatter constantly to their dogs to keep them motivated. It is important to remember that a handler cannot talk in the obedience ring during an exercise while the dog is working. When a typically talkative handler goes into the ring and is silent, dogs will often shut down. The dog sees the handler acting differently and responds by tuning out, wandering off, or stops working. A handler has to teach their dog to trust their silence while working by training like they trial and trial like they train. A handler can practice their heeling in a more formal and quiet manner. A dog needs to be able to trust a quiet handler. Silence should mean to a dog that they are doing the right thing and they should keep doing it. Teaching your dog to trust your silence doesnt mean youre quiet all the time. When the dog is first learning something, by all means, talk them through it. It also doesnt mean that you are silent when you release your dog...play and be engaging and fun! Cris, Lars, and Ocean trainemtasks
