One reason dogs are known as mans best friend is because they are extremely intelligent. At the same time, chickens and turkeys are often accused of being stupid (hence the term birdbrain to refer to someone lacking in intelligence). Our dog Mischka knows that go to your room means she needs to go into the family room. Our dog Cooper understands that the question do you need your crate? means he needs to calm down. And our male turkey Franklin knows that get in your pen means he needs to go into the dog kennel in the barn (used as an exam area when our vet comes over but also for Franklin before anyone comes over because he gets just a tad too protective of his soulmate Fiona around strangers). So, turkeys are stupid? Then why is it that our turkey understands the same sort of direction as do the dogs? Even a poultry scientist who has devoted part of his career to working for the meat industry argues that turkeys are intelligent. You wouldnt eat a dog for Thanksgiving dinner, would you?
