One sees how the 2009 Tony audience responds to the title song. And, despite subjective reservations about the affinity between venue and property, and much ambivalence about certain staging choices, after todays dress rehearsal, can say without fear of contradiction that between the basic rightness of Mr. Parrishs Claude (so sunny and sweet and appealing, even but half-warmed up), Ms. Bells Sheila (dulcet-toned and accomplished, the tendency to insert Its before the titular strophes of Easy To Be Hard about the worst one can say) and especially Mr. Walkers Berger (at the dress run-through already a mercurial, galvanic force of nature); the general elation, skill and spirit of their hard-working colleagues, Ms. Rileys Dionne and Mr. Platts Woof particularly noteworthy; and the many diehard fans, devotees and Tribal followers sure to be in attendance, this weekends Bowl edition of the indestructible Rado-Ragni-MacDermot tribal love-rock musical will cause crowds to go similarly berserk. It didnt exactly transport us, or at any rate make us forget ourselves, and there are logistic, focal and kinetic decisions that are less than felicitous to getting lyrics out and maintaining enough breath to sustain vocal line. But, frankly, such observations are going to be utterly irrelevant On The Night(s), when audiences will devour it like hallucinogenic brownies. Let the sunshine in.... ✌ ✌ ✌
