One small battle won-yay us!!! During rounds today I expressed my concerns over the fairness of taking the water away from Damien after getting him used to having it using his emotional and psychological health as the basis of my argument. I mentioned the fact that Damien will always need specialized medical care due to his complex needs and that he will be coming and going from the hospital for the rest of his life. I said we want to do all we can to minimize the trauma of it all as best as we can but how can I do that if we are showing him nothing but the worst. I then asked the Dr how is he ever supposed to be able to trust us if we do not stick by the things we tell him? After some back and forth it was decided that Damien can and will still get his water but we are trying something new to get some extra calories (since he wants NO PART of drinking the formula). We will be adding Duocal to the water he takes by mouth. Duocal is a powder and is clear and tasteless (or its supposed to be). It packs 25 calories/scoop so the hope is that Damien wont notice it in his sips and he will get a tiny bit of extra nutrition. Its not alot, but since he is losing quite a bit of weight every little bit helps. It may not the best since he is only allowed 40 mL (which is just shy of 1 1/2 ounces) for the ENTIRE day but it is a victory and one we are happily celebrating. :) Hopefully soon we can be posting that he got his new to him kidney and can drink to his sweet hearts content. Hang on Damien, your miracle is coming!!!
