One societal challenge is that we have more leeches or takers than those who give or add value. We have more numbers in the vast unprepared majority of laggards. The takers remind one of sewer rats gnawing away at the very fabric of society. Like leeches, they drain the lifeblood of society. Leeches love to give testimonies at their places of worship of how they passed an examination with flying colours without studying for it and the congregation laps it up, claps at this miracle and rises to give thanks and praise! Such actions are often based on the fundamentally flawed reasoning and teaching by New Age motivational speakers and religious leaders who convince their followers that they can expect miraculous favours and overnight success without commensurate work. Lack of success or misfortune is then attributed to some supernatural force thats beyond their control. The other day, a colleague invited me to his church for a baby dedication. At a point in the ceremony, the pastor urged the congregation to stand up and box the devil who was responsible for their setbacks and misfortunes. I never knew shadow boxing had been introduced to religious ceremonies. The congregation began a physical boxing match with the devil and other perceived spiritual enemies. I was perplexed as I watched the curious show. Some of the participants looked strangely at me since I wasnt looking for a sparring partner. It is strange that without adding any value or doing any commensurate work, someone can be hoodwinked into believing that God or some secret Santa will turn them into overnight successes. Thats a curious philosophy of life.
