One the one hand, we have a lot of rules on our books to allow for exceptions: practicing Jews wearing the specialized headgear, a non shaving medical profile, etc... On the other hand, none of them have allowed no shaving AND special headgear AND other special exceptions all in one package. I honestly cannot think of a single subculture/group/set of people who get this much exception in the name of religious respect within our ranks. Ive seen a lot of other religions and such flat out denied even being able to go to church, and then forced to shave/change clothing and even discriminated against simply because a leader could do it to them. There are two issues: the rules on the books, and the application. And the rules were set in the first place to force everyone to be broken down and forced to fit the mold the military needed, regardless of where you come from. So this seems to fly in the face of that. That said, I also think its silly that beards have been deemed unseemly in the military over time. Considering some of American historys top leaders. At the end of the day, though, if they are going to allow this, they need to more evenly be a Hell of a lot more tolerant to other faiths/backgrounds/etc. OR they need to enforce everything evenly for all. The military certainly has changed a lot even since Ive been in. Snopes article for anyone interested, too. snopes/politics/religion/armyturban.asp
