One thing(if youre a songwriter) I can recommend, and that Ive always been doing, is to never let the recording/mixing of a song stop the evolution of the song. For me the song is not finished until the very last steps of mixing/recording. I change parts, re-record, rearrange songs freely up until the point that is the final master. For instance, Im currently writing lyrics and vocals for a set of already recorded songs. But rather than building the vocals/lyrics around the music, Im building the riff around the vocals in some songs. This means that a perfectly awesome riff is scrapped in benefit of the vocal part. Another example is the instrumental song Vinter. It started out as a thrash song that I totally dissected into a slow epic ballad. Question your music and kill your darlings!
